An Ode To Criterion Box Art
Posted by Andrew Lindstrom / Inspiration,Lists / October 9th, 2008
For film nerds like myself, the Criterion Collection is the crème de la crème. Every title in their incredible catalog is restored to pristine picture and sound quality and usually boasts some of the best bonus features out there.
But what is really seals the deal is Criterion’s gorgeous box art. Every DVD in the Criterion Collection sports a completely original box art design. They must have some of the best in-house designers working today as their DVD packaging just can’t be beat. Needless to say, this makes it especially hard for the DVD collector to resist.
Here are 50 of my favorites…

I love so much here, but esp the minimalism of the Ice Storm cover and the wit of the typography on Scenes from a Marriage. Thanks for posting these.

I just wanted to let you know that I completely ripped off your idea (http://visualarts.slowcentury.com/post/77499878/50-beautiful-boxes-for-50-beautiful-films).
I did give you credit for it though. Your list is really lovely.

Some are a little less than truly original. For example the very first on your page Days of Heaven looks like a total lift of Hopper’s House Behind the Railroad.
excellent choices.
A couple of my favorite Criterion covers are “Man Bites Dog” and “RoboCop”.

thanks for this page…
Am so glad that I found your site. Love the collections of osters, specially the Polish ones and the Criterion ones. Found the old original and the Criterions interpretation of the film Robinson Crusoe on Mars’ (the original claiming to be scientifically accurate). Here, in India, it’s difficult to get hands on pulp/cult American movies (one of my fav genre) like Plan 9. It’s great to see the posters. These styles are also very inspirational, considering some of the sci-fi earlier styles have come back. take care.
nice post. i love each and every criterion features.
Very nice collection, thanks for taking the time to compile it. Just a note, I don’t know about the majority but Two Lane Blacktop was not done in-house. It was designed by the talented Marc English.
Can’t say more than .. terrific
