10 Podcasts I Couldn’t Live Without
Posted by Andrew Lindstrom / General / September 18th, 2008
Those of you who know me know that if I were to call myself a ‘podcast enthusiast’ it would be something of an understatement. I have such an addiction to podcasts it’s way beyond anything healthy. At the time being, I am subscribed to almost 40 of ’em… and it’s not nearly enough.
As a freelance web designer I spend a large chunk of time designing to these shows and they have become an integral part of my working routine. Here are my 10 absolute favorites.
The Rissington Podcast
John Oxton and Jon Hicks – two of the hottest names in web design – take questions from their listeners. Though the topics are not always design related, they are always entertaining and charmingly British.
The 404
The 404 from CNET is a podcast that covers everything an immature guy like me can’t get enough of. From video games to pop culture to weird current events, they cover it all and are hilarious while doing it. And did I mention it’s daily?!
You Look Nice Today
This is the kind of show that makes you look crazy when riding the bus. It will cause you to burst out into hysterical laughter leaving everyone else frightened and confused. Listen at your own risk.
Film Junk
As I’ve previously mentioned I’m a total movie nerd and as such listen to a plethora of movie podcasts. Film Junk, however, is by far my favorite. I’ve been listening for almost 3 years and it has never let me down.
Maniacal Rage
Maniacal Rage pure comedic gold. It’s a rather new discovery for me, but I’ve been quickly burning through the archives. Fans of quick, deadpan comedy should definitely check it out.
Freelance Radio
Freelance Radio is the podcast from one of my favorite websites; Freelance Switch. It covers the ins and outs and ups and downs of the freelance lifestyle. I have learned a lot from this show.
Net @ Night
Leo Laporte and Amber MacArthur spend countless hours surfing the internet just to share their discoveries with their listeners. A great show for anyone into web 2.0, new media and all those other fancy buzzwords.
Smodcast
Smodcast is a weekly podcast from film director Kevin Smith and producing partner Scott Mosier. The subject matter can get pretty inappropriate at times, but it makes me laugh. Definitely not for the easily offended or the high of brow.
Diggnation
I’m sure a lot of you have heard of this one, but I would be remiss not to include it in this list. Diggnation is a video podcast covering the popular stories that week from digg.com …usually while inebriated.
This American Life
Okay, I’m cheating a little here. This American Life, technically speaking, is a national public radio show that happens to podcast its episodes to the internet. But I’m oh so glad they do. Each episode picks a theme and assembles a collection of stories surrounding that theme. I can’t even put into words how much I love this show. Just check it out.
Any Suggestions?
Are there any fellow podcast addicts out there care to share their favorites? I’m always on the prowl for a new fix.

I can’t live without the CBC Radio 3 podcasts! Grant Lawrence broadcasts the weekly podcast from Vancouver, and Craig Norris and Pedro Mendes do the weekly R3-30 from Toronto. Plus they have an excellent video podcast too, and a track-of-the-day. (And no, I don’t work for the CBC!)
I love You Look Nice Today. It really does cause me to burst out laughing on my bus ride into Manhattan. People around me probably think I have serious mental problems.
@Sean – I really like ‘the sound of young America’ but I’ve never heard ‘Jordan, Jesse, Go!’. I will check it out.
@James – I listen to a lot of CBC on the radio and have never looked into their podcasts. Thanks for the tip!
@Desserts – I wonder how many of us ylnt listeners this happens to? 🙂
Thanks for the list!
Also try “NPR: Car Talk”, you might like it. Or “APM: The Story” It’s kinda like “This American Life”, but not as good.
The Best Show on WFMU! Three hours of hilarity each and every week.

Great list. I’d like to add to it. People have been getting on my case for years for being a podcast junkie so let me share the wealth. I won’t include the software specific ones. 76 and counting. Damn I need to cut back.

Two must haves:
1) Democracy Now! – http://www.democracynow.org/
It’s political, but if you listen to news then why not listen to news that belongs in the mainstream.
Waiver: may cause you to get stressed out and overthrow your government
2) (already mentioned in a previous post) CBC Radio 3
I would like to second ‘RadioLab’ I am a huge fan of This American Life, but I think RadioLab might be even better.
also, every music lover should listen to Sound Opinions from Chicago Public Radio!
Hey, big fan of the site. I think you’d love this podcast: http://www.helloandwelcometotheinternet.com. Certainly one of the stranger casts you’ll hear – three 18 year old New Zealanders shooting the shit.
Adam Eason has some excellent uk hypnosis and nlp podcasts – well worth checking out!
